Frequently asked questions:

Where are you located?

I am based and licensed in Wisconsin. I am also licensed in Iowa. I have an “Authorization to Practice Interjurisdictional Telepsychology” from the PSYPACT Commission, which means I am able to see individuals located in 42 different states over telehealth. Please click here to check if you are located in one of these states.

Can I see you in person?

I am currently only seeing individuals via telehealth. Current research indicates that telehealth is as good, or better, than in-person therapy for most diagnoses. However, certain diagnoses, presentations, and levels of acuity are best treated in person. For this reason, we will use part of the 15-minute consultation to determine if telehealth is the best form of therapy to meet your needs.

What is your availability?

I am open on weekdays and offer sessions in the mornings and afternoons, ranging from 10 am-5 pm CST. Please reach out to me if you have specific scheduling needs, and I can let you know if I can accommodate that.

What are your fees?

Please click here to be taken to my fees page, which includes information about different session lengths, insurance vs paying out of pocket, and the Good Faith Estimate.

What can I expect from therapy?

Prior to the first session, you will be emailed some intake paperwork to complete. Please complete this a minimum of 12 hours before the scheduled appointment. If you’re using insurance, please complete this at least 2 days in advance of our first session to be sure my billing provider has sufficient time to verify your benefits. We may have to reschedule the first appointment if the paperwork is not completed on time.

Therapy looks a bit different for everyone. In general, the first session is more of an information-gathering session, where I will ask you questions about your background, what’s bringing you in, and what you’re hoping to get out of therapy.

The remaining sessions are more based on what your goals are and what you want to be focusing on. Some people like to focus on the here and now, discussing what’s going on on a week-to-week basis to improve how they’re handling stressors, some people like to explore the past and things that led to how they currently are, and others like to focus on the future, learning new skills to set them up for a better tomorrow. I’m happy to focus on whatever feels most pressing to you, and it’s ok for that to change between sessions.

It sometimes takes a few sessions to get comfortable in therapy. I encourage you to plan on starting with 8-12 sessions. Therapy is very collaborative, so be prepared to have topics/things you want to work on in session. Some sessions may be more hands-on, where I teach you specific skills and psychological concepts. Other sessions may be more focused on processing the past, present, and future.

What happens in the 15-minute consultation?

The free 15-minute consultation serves 5 main purposes.

1) It lets me learn about why you’re seeking therapy, so I can assess whether I’m a good fit to help you.

2) It gives you a chance to learn more about me and my approach, so you can decide if I’m someone you’d like to work with.

3) It helps us determine whether telehealth is appropriate for your presenting concerns. While telehealth is effective for many concerns, it is not appropriate for individuals with active suicidal/homicidal thoughts, psychosis, or severe eating concerns, for which in-person care is recommended.

4) We’ll review some administrative details, like your location and whether you plan to use insurance or pay privately.

5) Finally, we’ll check in on any lingering questions, and if we’re both ready, we’ll go ahead and get your first session scheduled. You don’t have to commit during the consultation; we can always connect later.

It sounds like a lot to cover in 15 minutes, but it is absolutely doable!

What is the cancellation policy?

Please give as much notice as possible if you need to cancel or reschedule. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours advanced notice will be charged the full session fee.

What is the discharge policy?

Reasons include the natural end of therapy, individuals choosing to discontinue, being referred to another provider/level of care, no communication for more than 60 days, 3 late cancels/no-shows in a row, and noncompliance with treatment, which may include not completing required intake paperwork prior to the intake session.
